The event
in Belgrade is the second top championships within a short time for many
of the juniors after the FINA World Championships held in Monterrey, Mexico,
three weeks ago. 40 european countries are entered for the competition
with more then 600 athletes. To remind you, Russia last year came first
in Antwerp'07, Belgium, with 8 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze medals, followed
by Great Britain (6-7-3), Poland (6-1-3), Hungary (5-1-5) and Italy (4-7-7).
Five of the European Junior Champions will try to defend their titles:
Ivan Lendjer, SRB (100m fly), Adam Maczewski, POL (50m back), Margaux Fabre,
FRA (200m free), Beatrix Bordas, HUN (50m fly) and Caterina Brighi, Italy
(400m IM). A further 11 medal winners of last year will also take part
in the Championships. As LEN announced, six of the eleven Euro title holders
from Monterrey and 28 of the 38 European medal winners in the individual
competitions at the World Championships will compete in Belgrade. The six
World Junior Champions are Luca Dotto, Italy (100m free), Krzysztof Pielowski,
Poland (1,500m free), Daniel Sliwinski, Great Britain (50m & 100m breast),
Dimitri Colupaev, Germany (200m IM), Elodie Schmitt, France (50m free)
and Silvia di Pietro, Italy (50m butterfly). So, let the 2008 Junior Championships
begin!!! |
